Tadcaster Albion have stepped up their bid for promotion by signing attacking midfielder Conor Sellars for the rest of the season.

Sellars learnt his trade with Middlesbrough before going on to play as a full time professional for CF Faõ in Portugal and IF Hottur in Iceland.

The 23-year-old set-piece maestro has also played for Harrogate Town, but has most recently been playing for Worksop Town, where he was last season’s leading goalscorer.

Sellars, who is a coach at Bradford City, has been unable to attend Worksop’s training sessions on a Thursday night due to work commitments, which has made things difficult for both management and the player himself. Sellars left the club earlier this week by mutual consent.

Despite there being interest from clubs in higher leagues, Sellars was quick to get in touch with Tadcaster Albion’s Manager Billy Miller about the possibility of a move.

Sellars said: “As soon as I knew I was leaving Worksop Town, I knew straightaway that I wanted to join Tadcaster Albion. It’s clear for everyone to see that something very special is happening at the club.

“Every time I’ve played against Tadcaster, I’ve always really admired the club and its ethos, and I really want to be a part of that.

“I’ve played alongside Matt Heath and Dan Clayton at Harrogate Town in the past and I’ve also played under Billy Miller whilst on a loan spell at Harrogate Railway, so I know what to expect in terms of the high standards they set.

“I came along to training on Wednesday night and met with the club’s board of directors and the management team, and once again I was impressed with everything I saw. It just feels right and I can’t wait to get started.”

TAFC Manager Billy Miller said: “I was very impressed with Conor when I signed him on loan at Harrogate Railway. He’s fantastic at set pieces and link-up play, and he scores and makes goals for fun, so I’m very much looking forward to working with him again.”

Sellars is the son of former Leeds, Blackburn and Newcastle player Scott Sellars, who now works as a coach at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With Sellars Jnr expected to travel with the squad to Sunderland RCA on Saturday, he will be hoping to emulate the success of his Dad - who in 1993 helped Newcastle United beat Sunderland 1-0 with a glorious over-the-wall free kick.

TAFC Chairman Matt Gore said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome Conor to Tadcaster Albion. He’s an exceptionally talented midfielder who has impressed us every time we’ve seen him play.

“As soon as I heard from Billy that he was interested in joining the club, I got in touch with the Worksop Town Chairman Kevin Keep who confirmed that it was OK for us to speak to him.

“It’s extremely promising that we are able to attract players of Conor’s calibre, especially when he could have gone to a club higher up the footballing pyramid for more money. We’re very much looking forward to seeing him in a Taddy shirt.”

Tadcaster Albion take on Sunderland RCA in the FA Vase 3rd round tomorrow.

A coach leaves Acomb Green at 11.30am and the i2i Stadium at 11.45am. To book a place on the coach please call Emma on 01904 606000 or contact info@tadalbion.com
