TAFC player to raise money for Stroke Association in Leeds 10k

New TAFC signing Liam Ormsby will take part in the Leeds 10k this weekend to raise money and awareness for the Stroke Association.

Liam will take part in the Jane Tomlinson event alongside his dad Brendon Ormsby who suffered a stroke seven months ago.

Back in December, former Leeds United captain Brendon suffered a major stroke which left him paralysed down his right-hand side, and with limited speech and language skills.

Doctors initially feared that Brendon might never walk again, but the 53-year-old was determined not to let this happen and set himself the target of undertaking the Leeds 10k on July 20th.

After three months of physiotherapy sessions, Brendon has regained movement in his right side, but still has difficulty communicating.

Liam said: “My Dad has been through a lot over the last seven months, so I’m really looking forward to Sunday as it marks a major milestone in his recovery. I know he’s absolutely determined to make it round, and I’ll be with him every step of the way.

“Hopefully by doing the 10k we’ll also be able to raise awareness about the effects of a stroke on a person’s life, as well as the great work of the Stroke Association.

“A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored us so far. My Dad and my family have been overwhelmed by everyone’s support.”

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post last week, Brendon’s wife Wendy said: “Physically he’s done amazingly. From the specialist saying he didn’t think Brendan would walk again, he can do 20 minutes on a treadmill, and his gait is incredibly good.

“The 10k has given us something to focus on, rather than his stroke. He’s only done one-and-a-half miles jogging. How he’s going to finish the race, I don’t know. He will finish it somehow, but we don’t know what effect it’s going to have on him. If he needs to walk, he will walk, but knowing Brendan he won’t want to.”

Tadcaster Albion will be sponsoring Liam and Brendon’s efforts. To make your own donation visit www.justgiving.com/run4brendonormsby
